Annie, orphaned after her mother’s death, is placed in an orphanage where she entertains fellow children with ghost and goblin tales. The matron finds her abusive uncle Thomp, who forces her into hard farm labor. Neighbor Big Dave rescues her, becoming her protector. Later she lives with Squire Goode’s family, continuing her stories while fearing her cruel aunt and uncle. When war calls, Dave enlists and is reported dead, crushing Annie, who falls ill and dies surrounded by family.
