Jacques' father was a shellfish diver who wore a pump-supplied air hose and helmet. During a dive, rocks shifted and trapped his breathing apparatus and rope. The weight of the water and the tangled equipment pulled him under, and he drowned in front of young Jacques and Enzo, leaving a lasting trauma that shapes Jacques' relationship with the sea.

Jacques possesses a rare physiological ability passed down from his father - the capacity to significantly slow his heart rate during dives. This allows him to stay underwater longer than ordinary divers. He becomes a research subject in physiological studies, working with dolphins and testing his body's responses to extreme cold water immersion in the Peruvian Andes.

Enzo decides to descend deeper than Jacques to reclaim his title as the best freediver, ignoring the dive doctor's explicit warnings that the new depths have become lethal. He reaches a depth where his body can no longer make the return journey. Jacques dives down to rescue him, but Enzo dies in Jacques' arms, having chosen the abyss over surfacing.

The dive doctor warned both men that the deeper dives were becoming lethal territory.

As Enzo dies in Jacques' arms, he begs Jacques to bring him down deeper, saying "it is better down there" and that the depths are where he belongs. Jacques honors his friend's final wish by carrying Enzo's body to a depth where the human body becomes negatively buoyant, letting him slip beneath the waves into the abyss.

Enzo had declared throughout his life that he belonged to the sea.

After the rescue attempt, Jacques suffers a cardiac arrest on the surface. Supervising divers manage to restart his heart using a defibrillator. He is taken to medical quarters to recover, where he experiences hallucinatory dreams about the ocean filling his room.

When Johana discovers she's pregnant and finds Jacques unresponsive with bleeding from his ears and nose, she pleads for him to stay alive with her. However, Jacques insists he must return to the ocean one last time. In a devastating act of trust and surrender, Johana hands him the release cord but then pulls it herself, sending him down into the darkness.

The ending is intentionally ambiguous. Jacques descends into the deep, a dolphin appears beside him, and he releases his hold on the harness, drifting away with the creature into the darkness. The film leaves it unclear whether Jacques is committing to the sea permanently, has found spiritual transcendence, or is simply surrendering to his deepest calling - the sea was always his true love, and he may have finally merged with it.

Throughout the film, Jacques describes feeling most alive underwater and describes the surface as "another world."

Johana is an American insurance investigator who fabricates an insurance problem to position herself at the World Diving Championships in Taormina, Sicily, where Jacques will be competing. This deception allows her to get close to Jacques, and from this strategic beginning, a genuine romantic relationship develops between them.

Enzo's pride and competitive drive will not allow him to accept defeat, especially to Jacques. When Jacques reaches 400 feet, Enzo feels compelled to push deeper to reclaim his status as the best, despite knowing the lethal risks. His personality is defined by bravado and refusing to accept limits, ultimately leading to his fatal decision.
