As a humorous note, if you’re looking to “punish” your family, showing them this film may just leave them appreciating every minute of their lives afterward.
The dim-witted yet lovable character, Derek Zoolander, played by Ben Stiller, loses his crown as the top male fashion model when he is eclipsed by the up-and-coming Hansel, portrayed by Owen Wilson. Adding to his woes, Derek’s reputation takes a hit following a scathing article by journalist Matilda Jeffries, played by Christine Taylor. After a tragic “freak gasoline-fight accident” claims the lives of his three flatmates and fellow models, Derek decides to retire from modeling and attempts to reconnect with his family by working in the coal mines. However, his gentle approach proves impractical for such a demanding job, leading to his family’s rejection.
On the other side of the fashion spectrum, Jacobim Mugatu, played by Will Ferrell, and model agent Maury Ballstein (Jerry Stiller) are tasked with finding a model they can brainwash to carry out an assassination of the newly elected progressive Prime Minister of Malaysia. This dark plan aims to ensure the continuation of cheap child labor in the industry. Despite his previous rejection by Mugatu, Derek seizes the opportunity to star in an upcoming runway show. He is taken to a facility disguised as a day spa, where he undergoes conditioning to execute the assassination when “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood plays.
Matilda, who feels partly accountable for Derek’s retirement, grows suspicious of Mugatu’s intentions. With a tip-off from an anonymous source, she attempts to confront Derek after he leaves the spa, but her concerns go unheard. Matilda later discovers Derek at a pre-runway show where he controversially loses to Hansel in a “walk-off” judged by none other than David Bowie. Following another mysterious call, Matilda meets hand model J.P. Prewett (David Duchovny) in a cemetery, who reveals that the fashion world is involved in several political assassinations and that the brainwashed models are typically killed once their mission is complete. Before he can divulge further information, they are attacked by Katinka (Milla Jovovich), Mugatu’s chief henchwoman, forcing them to escape.
Seeking refuge at Hansel’s home, they indulge in a wild assortment of narcotics and ultimately, a romantic connection blossoms between Derek and Matilda. The duo later break into Maury’s office to gather evidence of the assassination scheme, but struggle to access the needed files. While Derek heads to the fashion show, Hansel follows with the crucial computer, mistakenly convinced that “the files are inside the computer,” as Matilda advised him.
As Matilda attempts to intervene during Derek’s show, she is thwarted by Katinka. When Derek takes to the runway, Mugatu’s DJ inadvertently activates Derek’s conditioning, compelling him to kill the Prime Minister. Luckily, Hansel reaches the DJ booth just in time to change the music to Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit,” disrupting Derek’s programming. A fight ensues, but Hansel manages to unplug the system moments before Derek is set to carry out the deed.
In a last-ditch effort to cover up their scheme, Mugatu tries to eliminate the Prime Minister himself, but Derek, empowered by his ultimate look, “Magnum,” intervenes, stunning the audience and saving the day. Although the evidence is initially destroyed, Maury steps forward, revealing he has kept a backup, ready to expose the assassination plot out of guilt for his complicity.
Finally, as the chaos subsides, Mugatu is arrested, and Derek is commended by the Prime Minister. Back in his hometown, father Larry (Jon Voight) proudly acknowledges Derek’s newfound success.
In the film’s conclusion, Derek, Hansel, and Maury leave the fashion scene behind to create “The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too,” while Derek and Matilda embrace their new role as parents to a son named Derek Zoolander, Jr., who has already developed his debut modeling look.
