At a district‑attorney’s houseboat party a diamond disappears. He challenges the thief to return it by leaving an empty box on a table and turning off the lights. When the lights come back the box is gone and the attorney lies dead, stabbed. Police and the coroner arrive, but the coroner soon faces several attempts on his life. Ruth Whitman is found hidden in a grandfather clock clutching the gem box, claiming she was forced into the clock. The attorney’s butler/valet says he saw the killer, yet he is murdered shortly after, deepening the mystery.
