Nicole (Agnes Soral) is jailed for infanticide and meets murderer Marthe (Annie Girardot), who is favored by warden Dessombes (Marie‑Christine Barrault). The warden frames Nelly (Bernadette Lafont) for drugs and puts her in solitary. Newcomer Sabien (Corinne Touzet), convicted of armed robbery, attaches to Lucie (Milva), a prisoner awaiting release.
