Alan Lloyd is a compulsive gambler deeply in debt, always looking over his shoulder for shady employers who want to collect what he owes. On a long promotional boat trip, he ends up hiding on the boat of [Charlie O’Brien], who is an actor hired to advertise a jam that tastes horribly sweet and artificial. When Alan is discovered, a scuffle erupts, and he and Charlie tumble off the boat into the sea, driven apart by the chaos of the moment.
The pair wash up on a remote island in the Pacific, where they initially believe they’ve found a true paradise with few people around. It doesn’t take long, however, for reality to intrude: a welcome party is interrupted by a recurring band of pirates who sail to the island each year to snatch natives for sale as slaves. Unaware that two outsiders have landed among them, these bandits threaten the fragile peace, and a fierce clash ensues. After a tumult of blows, the pirates are driven off, and the islanders begin to recover from the scare with a wary sense of relief.
As days turn into uneasy peace, the two travelers and the natives become accustomed to one another, and they cross paths with an old Japanese general who sits in a fortified retreat, stubbornly convinced that World War II is not over. In his bunker, he keeps a staggering stash of money that had been stolen from the United States Navy during the war. The discovery sends Charlie into a fever of delight, and he secretly pockets a portion of the money. But the general’s confidant later reveals the troubling truth: the money is fake.
With greed shaking the fragile trust of the island’s people, Charlie hatches a plan to flee using an old plane. Just as the plan unfolds, pirates and a fresh wave of criminals—who had previously tangled with Alan at the start—return to the island with renewed aggression. The natives are captured and humiliated, and the island’s balance is once again on the brink of disaster. Seeing their hosts in danger, the two friends spring into action, rejoining the struggle. They soar above the chaos in the old plane, soaring through a dramatic battle as fists and courage collide, and ultimately they overwhelm the invaders, restoring a precarious peace.
Their daring rescue is completed when a U.S. naval crew aboard the USS Forrestal arrives to pull them from the island’s perils. In a twist of fate, they hand over the “fake” money to the navy, only to be told that, in fact, the money was real—the government had spread the illusion to keep it from being spent by those who might misuse it. The two men return as heroes, though they do so penniless, bearing with them a handmade idol given by the grateful natives as a token of their thanks. The idol is donated to a museum, where it sits on display with a card declaring it worth a fortune.
In the closing moments, the idol’s gleam sits under glass in a museum, its value advertised for the world to see. Meanwhile, Alan and Charlie, now working as janitors, plot to one day reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs, their shared sense of mischief undimmed by the adventures they’ve survived. > “the war is not over,” the general had warned, a line that echoes through the island’s memories as the two friends walk back into the sun, ready for whatever comes next.
