After being denied the apartment due to unemployment, Frank recounts a story from his army service during the first Gulf War. This military experience impresses the social worker enough to give him a chance, she allows him until the end of the day to find a job and secure housing for his family.

Justin is Frank's stepson, and the resentment stems from the family falling into homelessness. Justin clearly struggles with the loss of their previous life and blames Frank for their circumstances. During their day together, this tension gradually eases as they bond through their shared struggle.

The resentment is evident from the start when Justin accompanies Frank on his job search, showing visible frustration with the situation.

While searching for work, Frank and Justin notice an old man searching for Frank to deliver an important letter. The old man turns out to be the father of the construction contractor Frank previously worked for under the table. This encounter hints at a past connection but is not fully resolved in the story.

Frank is offered a painting job at a school and feels a moment of hope. However, when the school runs a background check, his felony record is revealed and the job is immediately taken away. This illustrates how his past continues to trap him, as even legitimate employment opportunities are closed off due to his criminal history.

Outside the shelter, Frank encounters the man who had stolen his jacket earlier. In a moment of emotional turmoil and desperation, having lost the apartment, the money, and facing eviction, Frank confronts the man and beats him to reclaim his jacket. This violent outburst represents his desperate attempt to assert dignity and control in a situation where everything has fallen apart.

When Frank's wife considers calling her abusive ex for help, Justin refuses to go with her and instead chooses to stay with Frank. This pivotal decision reflects his growing loyalty and bond with Frank after their day together, as well as his rejection of the abusive relationship his mother is considering returning to.

Throughout their job search, Frank and Justin gradually connect and understand each other better, building toward this moment of loyalty.

Although Frank is not formally charged for the confrontation with the jacket thief, his violent actions outside the shelter violate shelter rules. The resulting eviction leaves the family without the one place they had to stay, forcing them to seek refuge elsewhere.

At the restaurant, Frank's wife attempts to leave without paying, a habit that seems to stem from their desperate circumstances. Frank, however, insists on doing the right thing and pays the bill, contrasting his moral stance with the survival-driven behavior that poverty has forced upon his wife.

After being turned away from another shelter that is full, the family takes the subway to Brooklyn to search for yet another shelter. The movie ends with them on the subway together, playing a game they once enjoyed, their future uncertain and the dream of a warm Christmas home having slipped away.
