Set at the turn of the twentieth century, a young Greek merchant is seized by brigands in a remote mountain area, who plan to ransom him from his wealthy family. Among them he grows sympathetic toward the brigand and begins to see their lifestyle and moral code as a truer expression of ‘New Hellenism’ than the comforts of his bourgeois upbringing.
