Jeff Jon Heder is an anxious thirty-something who has spent years as the general manager of Winkys World, a run-down bowling alley on the suburbs of Chicago. A talented college dropout who left MIT to devote himself to the alley, he has severed contact with his family out of fear of their judgment. Despite the repetitive routine, Jeff finds comfort in his work, and he even channelled his talents into an elaborate video game, Wizzing Winkys, inspired by the very place he tends.

Among Jeff’s colleagues are stand-out characters like Stanford [Jeremy Shada], the laid-back nephew of Carl [Jim O’Heir], the tall, patient owner, and Sheila [Candi Milo], Carl’s ex-wife who serves as the bowling alley’s operations manager. Jeff gets along well with the crew and shares a strong rapport with Winkys’ regulars, yet his life lacks a personal romance or wider social ties beyond the lanes.

The pressure mounts when Sheila passes on the grim news: Carl intends to sell Winkys and close the business within 30 days. To stop the sale, Jeff devises a bold plan—a big weekend event that he believes could demonstrate the alley’s enduring value and community spirit. Sheila joins the effort, trying to charm Carl and win him over, though her efforts are not enough to change his mind. Stanford throws his support behind the plan, but his attempt to sway his uncle fails to shift the outcome.

A surprising twist arrives when Jeff and Lindy’s sisterly bond deepens as Lindy brings her friend Samantha into town. The two sisters promise to keep Jeff’s secret life under wraps, and Lindy nudges him to reconnect with their mother, who has been trying to reach him. Although Jeff initially resists, the visit softens him, and he earns a new warmth for life. A spark also forms with Samantha, giving Jeff a glimmer of a future beyond Winkys.

A separate, poignant thread unfolds when Jeff and Stanford discover an elderly homeless man secretly living in the bowling alley. They rush him to the hospital, where he falls into a coma. He is revealed to be Ernie “The Gernie,” a founding member of the Winkys World bowling team and a longtime friend of the original owner. This revelation reawakens a sense of history and belonging for the staff and deepens Jeff’s resolve to fight for the place they all share.

As preparations for the weekend event progress, Jeff’s connection with Lindy grows, and she reassures him that leaving MIT was nothing to be ashamed of—an idea that helps him regain confidence. Samantha leaves town briefly but promises to stay in touch, and Jeff starts to see a brighter path forward.

Lindy eventually breaks the news to the rest of the family, and their mother leaves a voicemail assuring Jeff that her love isn’t contingent on his career and that happiness is what truly matters. The weekend event proves to be a smashing success, drawing a huge crowd and impressing Carl. Yet Carl remains steadfast about the sale, even as he gains a new respect for Jeff and wishes him well in whatever comes next. Ernie is released from the hospital and attends a small closing ceremony organized by Sheila, Jeff, Stanford, and the others, marking a heartfelt goodbye to Winkys and a pledge to stay connected.

In the end, Jeff makes peace with the reality of Winkys being sold and resolves to make the best of whatever the future holds. A message from Samantha hints at a future reunion, and Jeff’s heart lifts as he prompts her to return soon. The final scene returns to family, as Jeff musters the courage to call his mother, signaling a tentative opening toward rekindled ties and a life beyond the bowling alleys.
