Pilar Miro relocates Goethe's triangular tragedy to contemporary Spain, where Werther teaches Greek at a school and falls for Carlota, the mother of one of his pupils and wife of Alberto. The film retains obsessive love, the decent rival, emotional withdrawal, letters and the movement toward suicide, but replaces the eighteenth-century social world and many events with a modern professional and marital context shaped around Eusebio Poncela's isolated protagonist.
