The film follows Uli’s journey from his peasant origins to the homes of the rich and influential. Its character work feels authentic, and the humor is surprisingly restrained for a Swiss production. Though an unknown cast limited U.S. release, it became one of Switzerland’s biggest box‑office hit of year and is adapted from Jeremias Gotthelf’s novel.
