After learning that she has a twin sister, a dry‑goods merchant’s daughter confronts a rural superstition that twins bring bad luck. Supposedly abandoned at birth and later claimed kidnapped, the sister appears, and both women become entangled in romantic relationships. The daughter’s educated suitor seems increasingly drawn to her twin, sparking jealousy and conflict.
