Too Late for Tears

A Los Angeles couple, Jane and Alan Palmer, are driving home from a party when a bag of cash is tossed into their car by an oncoming vehicle. They narrowly evade a second pursuing car and argue over what to do with the money. They decide to check the bag at Union Station.

Alan wants to turn the money over to the authorities, while Jane aims to keep it for themselves. They discuss the risks and consequences, then agree to go to Union Station to inspect the bag.

A man named Danny Fuller comes to the Palmer apartment and tells Jane the money was intended for him. Jane denies the money is there and suggests they split it instead.

Alan resolves to turn the bag over to authorities, while Jane resolves to kill him to keep the money. She proposes a pedal boat ride at MacArthur Park and arranges for Fuller to meet them there.

During the pedal boat ride, Jane and Fuller kill Alan and sink his body to destroy the evidence. The crime marks a turning point as Jane tries to cover her tracks.

Jane attempts to kill Fuller to prevent him from betraying her, but he escapes. The failed attempt forces her to rethink her plans and seek another path to control the situation.

Jane devises a scheme to make it look like Alan ran off to Mexico with the money by reporting him missing. She stages his disappearance to deflect suspicion from herself.

Alan's sister Kathy, who lives next door, grows suspicious and finds the bag's claim ticket. Her discovery raises the stakes as she starts investigating the missing man and the cash.

Don Blake arrives to help find Alan and quickly becomes entangled with Kathy. He is later revealed to be an impostor with hidden motives.

Jane discovers that Kathy possesses the claim ticket and pressures Fuller to help kill Kathy. Fuller agrees, tempted by a payoff and the chance to stay silent.

Jane unmasks Don as an impostor, knocks him out, and retrieves the claim ticket. The confrontation confirms Don’s true identity and his connection to Jane’s past.

Jane retrieves the bag and learns Fuller’s claim that the money is hush money for an insurance scam. She tricks him into drinking the poison meant for Kathy, killing him.

Jane escapes with the money to Mexico, leaving behind the unraveling schemes. Her flight marks the apparent triumph of her plan.

Don tracks Jane to her hotel room and blackmails her into confessing she killed Alan. He then reveals he is the brother of Jane’s first husband, implying a long history of danger and motive.

Mexican police breach the room and corner Jane, who accidentally falls to her death from the balcony. In the hotel lobby, Don and Kathy, now married, decide to end their honeymoon early and return to the United States.
