Directed by Marlon Riggs with help from gay Black men, especially poet Essex Hemphill, the film frames Black men loving Black men as a revolutionary act. It blends Hemphill’s poetry, Riggs’s personal narration, social and dance scenes, and comic bits like a visit to the “Institute of Snap!thology,” where men learn the sling, point and diva snaps.
