In 1523 Thomas Müntzer and his wife Ottilie become rector in Allstedt, Thuringia. Inspired by Luther, he sees the Bible demanding religious and secular reform. After Luther withdraws, Müntzer becomes the peasants’ spokesman, rallies farmers, and leads the 1525 Thuringian uprising. Internal divisions cause defeat at Frankenhausen, leading to his capture and execution by decapitation.
