A provincial dentist in Upper Yamki astonishes the medical world by discovering a thirty‑third tooth in Ivan Sergeyevich Travkin’s mouth. Tormented by pain, Travkin is sent to Moscow, where rivals have him committed to a madhouse. He later becomes the celebrated subject of an international conference and finally a patient of dentist Professor Bruk.
