Kirsten Schwarz is a 17-year-old girl nearing her 18th birthday, and she is suffering from insomnia. During her online searches, she becomes intrigued by the legend of the village Selmen, where many teenage girls commit suicide on their 18th birthday, hinting at an ominous premonition. Her curiosity about her own upcoming birthday sets the stage for the unfolding events.

Kirsten receives shocking news from her parents that she is adopted and that her biological father is still alive, contradicting her sister Marie’s previous assumptions. This revelation deepens her emotional turmoil and fuels her desire to understand her origins. Kirsten also learns that her parents believed her birth parents had died in a car accident.

Deciding to confront her fears and the village legend, Kirsten travels to Selmen, seeking answers about the mysterious deaths and the legend surrounding Hepzibah. She begins exploring the village, driven by curiosity and the need to uncover the truth about the supernatural presence.

Kirsten talks to Dr. Wagner, who offers her experimental sleep medication, hinting at her insomnia problem. She also meets Melanie, a girl her age who shares her own troubled experiences and mentions other girls like Stephanie, who is also at risk of suicide as her 18th birthday approaches.

A séance is organized to communicate with spirits, during which Melanie seemingly contacts a spirit named Hepzibah. This event stirs foreboding as Kirsten senses a malevolent presence linked to Hepzibah, especially as Melanie hears a crying baby in her vicinity, hinting at the dark forces at play.

During the séance, Melanie encounters Hepzibah's spirit, which manifests violently. The spirit attacks Melanie inside her walk-in closet by hanging her, creating the illusion of suicide. The incident emphasizes the dangerous influence of the supernatural entity haunting Selmen.

On her 18th birthday, Stephanie wakes up to find herself hanged in a derelict cottage, having been attacked by Hepzibah's spirit. Her parents discover her body, and it's believed to be a suicide, although her death hints at the sinister curse affecting the girls of Selmen.

Kristen learns about Hepzibah's past from a local librarian, discovering she was accused of witchcraft and executed at the stake. She also finds Hepzibah's diary, revealing her efforts to help villagers with natural remedies and her tragic fate, which is central to the curse.

Marie, appearing to help Kirsten, secretly manipulates the situation to serve Hepzibah's purpose, wanting to be the ninth girl taken by the witch to start anew. Kirsten uncovers Marie’s plan to sacrifice her, believing it's part of the witch’s sinister scheme related to the number nine.

Kirsten rushes to the church and find the charred remains of a baby. Marie attacks her with an axe in a confrontation over Hepzibah's remains, but Pater Raymond intervenes. He blesses the remains to finally put Hepzibah to rest and ends the curse afflicting Selmen.

Raphael, injured from the ordeal, comforts Kirsten in the hospital and hints at a secret connection as he mentions the doctor who supplied her with drugs might be her biological father. Kirsten begins to process the curse's end, feeling relief but also uncertainty about her origins.

At an art institute, a young woman checking Selmen online witnesses eerie movements in the sculptures, and suddenly her computer screen displays a menacing close-up of Hepzibah’s face, suggesting that the spirit’s influence persists beyond the village, hinting at an ongoing supernatural presence.
