In early‑20th‑century Rome a psychiatrist must find a wet‑nurse for his baby after his wife panics in childbirth. He hires Annette, a peasant mother who abandons her own baby, and she instantly bonds with the infant, angering the wife. Annette, whose lover is jailed, asks the doctor to teach her to read. The two babies drive the drama to a climax.
