A patron of the arts, the elegant Duchess of Weissenfels blocks her nephew’s marriage to ambitious actress Philine (Hilde Krahl). In protest, theater director Karoline Neuber (Kathe Dorsch) incites scandal and is exiled. A doomed performance at the St. Petersburg court leaves the abandoned actress despondent, culminating in Karoline’s suicide.
