In the untamed expanses of the Wyoming frontier, solitude is a way of life for those who choose to live by the land. Yancey, a shy and unworldly mountain trapper, makes his home in these wilds alongside his Uncle Lije and Lije's Indian wife, far from the bustle and complications of civilization. Their existence is simple, defined by the rhythms of nature and the work of trapping beaver pelts—until circumstance forces Yancey to venture beyond his familiar forests.

When Lije suffers an injury that limits his ability to travel, the task of trading their season's harvest falls to Yancey.
