A Pulitzer‑winning journalist is drawn back into a Cold‑War‑era mystery by his editor. He discovers that the world’s second‑largest diamond was used during World II to bribe a guard and free a Jewish woman from a prison camp. After the war the gem vanished, and now Russians, ex‑Nazis, gangsters and the diamond’s original owner all hunt it, believing the reporter’s earlier story about a camp survivor points to its whereabouts.
