Intelligent scholar Harrison MacWhite survives a hostile Senate confirmation and becomes U.S. ambassador to Sarkan, a Southeast Asian nation teetering on civil war. In Sarkan he sees only a U.S.–Communist clash, dismissing anti‑American feelings as a drive for self‑determination. Defying local advisers and his ally Deong, he forces a road project ahead, costing the country and his friends dearly.
