Illegitimate son of Prime Minister Hong, Gil-dong becomes disillusioned with feudal oppression and leads the outlaw group Hwal‑bin. As a Robin‑hood figure, he robs the wealthy to aid the poor. Despite repeated royal orders to capture him, the authorities fail. Ultimately he founds the independent realm of Yul‑do and crowns himself its king.
