A Brechtian musical follows a young woman who flees her decaying noble fiancé and marries a sailor, illustrating the difficulty of translating a stage show to film. The production abandons surrealistic set design in favor of cinematic tricks—multiple exposures, undercranking, distorted angles and lenses. The effort is inventive but never fully succeeds.
