After deciding to postpone a 1978 benefit show, Amnesty International reevaluated how to best utilise the willing performers for fundraising. With Peter Luff’s departure, new fundraiser Peter Walker teamed with producer Martin Lewis to redesign the event for greater revenue and awareness. Lewis suggested adding contemporary rock acts; John Cleese assigned him that task, leading to the recruitment of The Who’s guitarist Pete Townshend and New‑Wave singer‑songwriter Tom Robinson.
