Hosted at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, the first Amnesty comedy benefit gala riffed on “at Her Majesty’s pleasure.” Though it pre‑dated the Secret Policeman’s Ball series, it is part of that legacy. Organized by John Cleese, Amnesty assistant director Peter Luff and Martin Lewis, it showcased Britain’s comic talent and shaped future Amnesty galas.
