The Rivals of Amziah King

In rural Oklahoma, Matthew McConaughey plays Amziah King, a beekeeper and bluegrass musician who becomes tangled in a case that blends crime, community, and a shared love of bees. When an OSBI agent named Sunderland asks him to identify a truckload of stolen honey, Amziah partners with his former employee Remmick and his friend Colmar to track down the loot. The situation spirals when a honey extractor tears off Colmar’s scalp, turning a routine retrieval into a race to salvage what’s left. After recovering Colmar’s scalp and his lucky hat, Amziah and his right-hand man Jimmy rush to the hospital, where Amziah also receives medication for his heart condition. The drama is felt as much in the hospital halls as in the beeyard, and the urgency of the moment is grounded by Amziah’s steady, homespun philosophy about church potlucks, neighborly ties, and the quiet rituals that hold a community together.

Amziah’s circle broadens when he reunites with his foster Native American daughter, Kateri, who has just lost her mother. Amziah introduces her to his musician friends and to their Brazilian American neighbors, weaving her into a world where music, bees, and shared meals create a fragile but resilient sense of belonging. He offers her a job caring for the honeybee farm, and the two share a chaotic but hopeful day as they remove a swarm from an elementary school, a moment that deepens her bond with the bees and with Amziah’s tightly knit circle. Through the chaos, Kateri discovers a calling and a community that feels like family, learning to see the bees not only as livestock but as living beings that bind people together.

When Amziah suddenly suffers a fatal heart attack after his hives are stolen, the film shifts from daily-life detail to a sharper, more personal reckoning. After his death, his lawyer and bandmate Rippy informs Kateri that she has inherited the struggling honey business, albeit with mounting debt. Rather than sell, she refuses to give up on Amziah’s dream and resolves to find the thieves, determined to carry on his legacy. Jimmy, who has a run-in with the law for drunk driving, urges Kateri to find the hives, but the trail runs cold as the business continues to run low on honey and hope.

A lead from a honey owner points Kateri toward a fellow beekeeper who unknowingly purchased some of the missing hives. With the help of Oat, a paroled criminal who offers information for a price, Kateri learns that Amziah’s bees were stolen by Wenyon Amos Stone, a thief working for a powerful businessman, Dob McCoy. The pursuit intensifies as Kateri tails Wenyon to his remote property, and in a tense confrontation she locks him in his overheated honey processing room, where he dies.

Determined to reclaim what was Taken, Kateri enlists Remmick’s help to steal back Amziah’s bees. They sneak onto Wenyon’s property and launch a makeshift river crossing, floating the hives on improvised rafts toward a getaway truck. The heist is captured on camera, and Remmick is arrested for breaking parole, throwing a wrench into their plans but also forcing them to improvise a new route to justice. The recovered bees and honey are sent to auction, and Rippy helps raise money for Kateri; yet she is outbid by Dob, who has grown rich by exploiting his neighbors.

Driven by revenge, Kateri grows increasingly consumed by the fight against Dob. She discovers that he is caring for his critically ill wife, a detail that adds moral complexity to her mission. At a church potluck, she secretly prepares a meal for Dob to bring home to his wife, intending to poison her with castor beans. The plan triggers a larger legal and moral battle: the suspicious death provides the police with a path to arrest Dob on murder charges. Dob leads investigators on a high-speed chase, but a freight train stops him in his tracks, and a stolen truck chase follows, ending with armed citizens pursuing and fatally leveling him. Sunderland’s investigation finally exposes Dob’s crimes, bringing some measure of closure to the case.

With Dob dead and his network dismantled, Remmick and Jimmy are paroled and join Kateri and their friends in stealing back Amziah’s hives once more. Sunderland, seeing the community’s resilience, contemplates closing the file, but the final mood is tempered hope: Kateri has not only saved the family business but also preserved Amziah’s beloved bees. She looks toward the future with a resolve to become a new queen of the local honey trade, carrying forward a legacy built on community, craft, and care for the creatures that brought them together.
