An unstable young woman named Barbara Lang (J. Smith-Cameron) takes drastic measures to safeguard her telekinetic daughter, Rachel Lang, from perceived demons by painting their house a vivid red. As a result of Barbara’s mental state, authorities intervene and separate mother and daughter, leading Barbara to be committed and Rachel taken into the care of foster parents.
Fast forward several years, and 18-year-old Rachel Lang now navigates life with her foster family while attending school. She rides the bus with her only friend, Lisa (Mena Suvari), who shares the story of losing her virginity to her boyfriend Eric (Zachery Ty Bryan), the local football star. The girls bond over their matching red rose thorn tattoos etched on their arms, a symbol of their friendship. Lisa gives Rachel a roll of film to develop, unaware of the tragedy that awaits them. Meanwhile, Eric and his teammates engage in a dangerous game revolving around their sexual conquests, tracking their scores like trophies in a quest for dominance.
Tragedy strikes when Lisa, devastated after Eric rejects her, takes her own life by jumping from the school rooftop. This shattering event awakens the dormant telekinetic powers within Rachel, manifesting as lockers slamming open in a sudden surge of rage. School counselor Sue Snell tries to console Rachel, revealing her own connection to the past, having once spent time in the very institution where Rachel’s mother resides. During this encounter, Rachel inadvertently causes one of Sue’s coffee mugs to crash to the ground, indicating her escalating turmoil. Sue later uncovers that Rachel and the late Carrie White share the same father, Ralph White, deepening the mystery surrounding Rachel’s family.
As tensions rise, Eric confides in Mark (Dylan Bruno), worried about the consequences of Lisa’s suicide and the fallout it might bring. He reveals their encounter to Mark, who manipulates the situation to protect his status and interests. Rachel’s life takes a complicated turn when she inadvertently discovers incriminating photos of Lisa and Eric while working at a local photo shop, prompting her to take matters into her own hands by reporting the incident to Sheriff Kelton (Clint Jordan). However, the powerful influence of Eric’s father threatens to quash the investigation.
When Rachel’s beloved dog Walter is injured, she attempts to save him, leading to further manifestations of her powers. After a fateful encounter with Jesse (Jason London), a teammate of Eric, Rachel finds herself in a budding romance, but the past looms large as the football players conspire to seek revenge on her for exposing their secrets. A night meant for celebration quickly turns into chaos as Mark publically humiliates Rachel at a party by revealing a video of her intimate moment with Jesse.
Overcome with bitterness and betrayal, Rachel’s telekinetic powers spiral out of control, transforming her into a figure of rage and destruction. The once-vibrant house becomes a scene of horror as her abilities manifest fiercely, leading to a terrifying reckoning for those who wronged her. “You can’t just walk away from this!” becomes a literal rallying cry culminating in a bloody confrontation where chaos reigns and lives are lost.
Amidst the chaos, Rachel’s struggles culminate in a tragic showdown confronting her feelings of love for Jesse. Ensnared in a moment of desperation, she fights to save him from the flames while confronting the reality of her powers and the devastation they wrought. As the night draws to a close, Rachel succumbs to her injuries, leaving Jesse to grapple with the aftermath of the horrific events.
One year later, Jesse grapples with the scars that remain, both physically and emotionally, as he recalls the fleeting moments spent with Rachel. Haunted by memories, he dreams of their love, which is both a beautiful and heartbreaking reminder of the girl who bore the weight of her powers and the tragedy that separated them.
