The third cinematic version of Selma Lagerlöf’s novel follows chronic drunkard David Holm, who dies at midnight on New Year’s Eve and is confronted by the death coachman, revealed to be his former friend Georges. As they revisit his past, David realizes he has ruined the lives of two women who loved him.
