TV journalist Lee Carter witnesses the shocking assassination of U.S. Senator Charles Carroll during a public event at the Seattle Space Needle. Amid the chaos, a waiter is mistakenly identified as a suspect but is quickly killed, while the real shooter escapes without a trace.

An official investigation follows the assassination, quickly concluding that a lone gunman was responsible for the heinous act. However, many remain skeptical, questioning the swift resolution and the possible conspiracy behind the attack.

Three years later, Lee Carter reconnects with her ex-lover Joe Frady and reveals her fears about the mysterious deaths of six witnesses to Carroll's assassination. She expresses her alarm that she might be the next victim, indicating the tension surrounding the unresolved murders.

Tragically, Lee Carter is found dead under suspicious circumstances, with authorities citing an overdose as the cause. Joe Frady is left tormented by guilt for dismissing her concerns and is determined to uncover the truth behind her death.

Frady's investigation leads him to Salmontail to look into the drowning of Judge Arthur Bridges, another eyewitness to the Carroll assassination. The local sheriff, Wicker, initially assists him but soon becomes hostile, complicating Frady's search for answers.

In a tense moment, Frady confronts Sheriff Wicker, resulting in a fierce struggle that leaves him shaken. After regaining his composure, he explores the sheriff’s residence and uncovers incriminating files related to the Parallax Corporation.

Frady learns about the Parallax Corporation, which recruits individuals under the guise of providing security services. This disturbing revelation adds another layer to the web of murder and conspiracy surrounding the witnesses of Carroll's assassination.

During his investigation, Frady encounters Austin Tucker, an aide to Senator Carroll who survived two assassination attempts. Tucker's insights into the ongoing danger affirm Frady's fears and fuel his determination to expose the sinister forces at play.

In a tragic turn of events, a bomb detonates on Austin Tucker's sailboat, killing him and his bodyguard. Frady narrowly escapes this explosion, prompting him to devise a daring plan to infiltrate Parallax by feigning his own death.

After successfully convincing Parallax of his false identity, Frady undergoes invasive psychological tests aimed at evaluating his reactions to propaganda. This step brings him deeper into the organization, raising the stakes for his investigation.

While on a flight, Frady discovers a bomb placed aboard the airplane, intending to target a fellow passenger, Senator Carroll. He alertly informs a flight attendant of the impending danger, leading to a tense evacuation just before the aircraft explodes.

Back in his apartment, Frady confronts Jack Younger from Parallax, who questions his legitimacy. Using a carefully crafted alibi, Frady manages to deflect suspicion, but the threat to his life continues to grow.

Frady's editor, Bill Rintels, listens to a critical recording of their conversation, unaware of the imminent danger. Tragically, as he eats dinner delivered from a deli, he is poisoned, eliminating a key source of evidence against Parallax.

Frady is assigned to protect a key operative during a political rally for Senator George Hammond. The mission takes a dark turn when Hammond is suddenly shot by a sniper, thrusting Frady into a deadly predicament.

After the assassination of Senator Hammond, Frady is wrongfully implicated as the shooter, leading to a manhunt orchestrated by Parallax. Six months later, an official inquiry concludes he acted alone, leaving unanswered questions and a trail of chaos.
