Saint Peter tells the Devil waiting at Heaven’s gate that God now doubts humanity’s capacity for salvation, meaning no souls will be claimed for Hell. To determine whether sin is innate or simply a refusal to improve, the Devil must descend to Earth in human form and achieve redemption himself—if he can, humans can too. The story adapts A. H. Tammsaare’s classic novel.
