In 1940s Georgia, a troubled teenager named David runs away from his impoverished hometown, seeking escape from a difficult past. Haunted by memories of a lonely childhood marked by his father's bullying and social isolation, he boards a train and begins to reflect on his family's struggles, including his mother's mental health challenges. Amidst these hardships, a quirky and welcoming aunt, Mae, provides David with a much-needed sense of belonging and offers a glimmer of hope for his future.
