After World War I, ex‑soldier Sébastien Monge returns to his village and learns his family was murdered 24 years earlier, he being the sole infant survivor. While Charmaine courts him, Dupin is killed, and the miller Didon Pujol, his next target, dies before he can act. Sébastien senses a hidden protector watching him, but the motive is unclear.
