On August 24, 1937 the film follows expressionist sculptor and author Ernst Barlach (played by Fred Düren) through a day in the quiet town of Güstrow, where he keeps to himself and avoids politics. He is stunned to discover that the Nazis have removed his renowned 1927 sculpture The Hovering Angel from Güstrow Cathedral. The episode forces Barlach to reflect on his years of “inner emigration,” his artistic legacy, and the moral dilemmas of living under a totalitarian regime.
