Joanne Hunter, a young American, is stranded in German‑occupied Holland with her Dutch grandparents. Captain Kessel, the German CO, seeks to break village morale, while Lt. Braun, quartered in Joanne’s home, dislikes Kessel’s brutal tactics. When Kessel threatens the historic lead statues of 16th‑century freedom fighters on the town clock, Joanne and her grandparents rally the villagers to defend Kirkendam’s beloved “little riders.”
