Beth, a helpline counselor who has spent years listening to others’ pain, finally confronts her own deep-seated feelings of guilt and loneliness by the end of the film. Throughout the movie, she’s portrayed as someone who tirelessly helps others but keeps her own vulnerabilities hidden behind a facade of calm and strength. When she opens up to Laura, a caller who is struggling with her own despair, Beth reveals her true self, sharing her past as an addict and her failure to save her stepbrother from suicide. This moment of honesty is pivotal because it shows her finally allowing herself to be vulnerable, breaking the barrier she always kept up—both to her callers and herself.

In helping Laura find hope that night, Beth begins to understand that connection and authenticity are vital to healing. Her decision to come outside and speak openly—revealing her real name, Maggie—symbolizes her willingness to face her own loneliness and accept her flaws. While she does not resolve her problems completely, she takes a significant step towards self-acceptance and understanding that she needs care as well as to give it. The end scene, where she tries to reach out to friends but faces rejection, emphasizes that even those who give the most emotional support often struggle with their own needs. Beth’s journey is about realizing that everyone has struggles, and sometimes, the act of helping others is also a way of tending to one’s own wounds. The film leaves us with a sense that true healing begins when we allow ourselves to be seen and understood, just as Beth finally does in that vulnerable, honest moment. Ultimately, her story suggests that no matter how alone we feel, connection—however imperfect—remains the key to overcoming loneliness and pain.
