The Lion of St. Mark

The Doge Feodor Chaliapin Jr. hosts a glittering ball in Venice around 1620 to celebrate the betrothal of his son, Manrico Venier Gordon Scott, to the elegant Lady Isabella Fieschi Franca Bettoia. The event also marks the Doge’s broader ambitions, as he looks toward his appointment as ambassador at the royal court of France. Yet this festive atmosphere is tangled with family dynamics and political pressures. Manrico, a soldier at heart and a patriot by instinct, is not thrilled by an arranged union, while his uncle, Gualtiero Giulio Marchetti, the Doge’s brother-in-law, quietly backs him against the Doge’s expectations. Conte Fieschi John Bartha, a powerful nobleman at the ball, watches the unfolding plans with a mixture of pride and concern, hinting at the intricate alliances that bind the city’s leadership to its fortunes.

The night takes a sharp turn when a fierce gang of Skokian pirates, led by Titta Alberto Farnese and his volatile ally Rossana Gianna Maria Canale, crashes the celebration. They strip the guests of valuables and desert the peace of the party, and Venice’s mercenary troops under Captain Ostenburg Attilio Severini prove unable to halt the raid. The intrusion awakens a resolve in Manrico to defend his city; in response, he assembles a band of friends and adopts the masked identity of the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol that quickly becomes a beacon of hope for the Venetians.

From the moment Manrico reveals his hidden identity, the tide of the conflict begins to shift. He leads several bold sorties against the pirates, scoring early victories and earning the trust and admiration of his people. Yet his personal life becomes entangled as he falls for Rossana, the very pirate who might justify a brutal vendetta against him. In a calculated twist, Manrico persuades Ostenburg to allow Rossana to fall under his supervision, a decision that looks both merciful and risky. He then releases her, a move that wins her reluctant affection but also complicates the loyalties within the pirate ranks. Rossana’s successful “escape” does not go unnoticed by Titta, who starts to see the seams of Manrico’s plan. When Rossana leaves to meet Manrico at a prearranged date, Vipera [Franco Fantasia], Titta’s loyal lieutenant, is sent after her and discovers the lovers’ liaison, sealing Manrico’s fate in the eyes of the pirates and drawing Vipera deeper into the conspiracy.

As the Feast of the Redeemer approaches, a new plan forms: Titta, Vipera, and Rossana devise a dangerous infiltration of the Fieschi ball, where Rossana was invited by Manrico, to kidnap the young noble and bend Venice to their will. The ball scene becomes a tense chessboard, with loyalties shifting as the lovers’ arrangement hangs in the balance. Ostenburg, ever vigilant, tracks Rossana and moves to arrest her, but a daring rescue disrupts the arrest. Jandolo [Rik Battaglia], Manrico’s loyal friend, appears in disguise as the Lion of Saint Mark to seize Rossana and spirit her away to safety at Torcello. This ruse buys Manrico time to confront Rossana and confess the truth about his double life, and she, torn between love and loyalty, declines his proposal and returns to Titta.

With reinforcements finally gathering, Ostenburg eyes a decisive strike against the pirates’ stronghold in Ragusa, a seaside stronghold that has long tested Venice’s resolve. Manrico plans to infiltrate the fortress from the landward side and create a breach by blasting through the wall, a tactic that would allow his allies—led by Gualtiero, who has long suspected Manrico’s secret—to penetrate the pirates’ defenses. The operation hinges on delicate timing and stealth, and the infiltrators are almost discovered, forcing Manrico and his small band to barricade themselves inside the fortress as Ostenburg’s troops commence their assault. The battle rages with grit and urgency, and Rossana, finally choosing Manrico’s side, makes a pivotal move by lighting a fuse to the powder magazine, triggering a breach that enables Manrico’s comrades to overwhelm the pirates.

In the aftermath, a measure of mercy and pragmatism seals the resolution: Gualtiero, seeking to spare Rossana the harsh punishment a pirate would face, adopts her as his daughter. This act, born of both compassion and strategy, clears the path for Manrico and Rossana to marry, uniting the lovers and, in a symbolic sense, reconciling the political and personal factions that had so long divided Venice. The city, battered but resolute, finds a measure of peace in a future shaped by courage, loyalty, and the lion’s enduring symbol as a beacon of Venetian identity.
