Toto (Aldo Fabrizi) is a Roman coachman attached to his horse‑drawn carriage and railing against motor taxis. He forbids his daughter Nannarella from seeing Roberto, a young taxi driver, but when Toto is blackmailed by his ex‑client, the singer Mary Dunchetti (Anna Magnani), Roberto steps in to help, forcing Toto to rethink his ways.
