During Lisbon’s Saint Anthony festival—a celebration of lovers in the historic quarter—nationalist politician Cato becomes obsessively infatuated with Silvia, a mystical young transvestite he meets at the festivities. When Silvia encounters Vicente, a policeman who arrests and threatens transvestites, she resorts to blackmail. Compromising photos of Cato surface in opposition circles, forcing him to risk everything to save his career.
