After a vixen mother raids a chicken coop to feed her cubs, a farmer shoots her and his attack leaves only one cub alive. Separately, 10‑year‑old Anders and his 6‑year‑old brother Kjell rescue an otter trapped in a burrow, secretly cage and domesticate it, feeding it by ice‑fishing on a frozen lake. They keep the animal hidden until the May Day festival, when Kjell reveals it; distressed, Anders runs into the woods with the otter, which breaks free and returns to the wild. The film won a prize at the 1954 Cannes Festival.
