He studies theology in Bergamo and Rome’s Apollinare School, becomes a priest and, for his erudition, rises to bishop and cardinal. After Pope Pius XII dies in 1958, the 77‑year‑old joins the conclave, hears “Tu es Petrus,” on 28 October becomes Pope John XXIII.
