Patricia O’Rourke, a good‑natured prankster and copy girl at the Sentinel, angers coworker Stubbs and risks losing her job. The managing editor offers one last chance: investigate the clue tying the Hope Mission—an abandoned home run by millionaire Hunter Mason and his secretary Monty Latham—to a series of local robberies. When Hunter finds Patricia in his office, he assumes she’s a wayward thief and brings her to his house, where his mother cares for her.
