The Flame Trees of Thika

Robin, Tilly, and Elspeth move to British East Africa to establish a coffee plantation. They meet Piet Roos, a Boer big game hunter, and Njombo, who comes to work for them. They decide to hire Sammy later to help run the operation.

Hereward and Lettice Palmer arrive in the area, stirring social dynamics among the settlers. A fight between Roos and Sammy foreshadows the local conflicts that will challenge the plantation. Njombo's position at the plantation becomes increasingly central to the power balance.

Njombo kills Kimon, the Palmers' headman, triggering a severe response from the colonial administrator. The administrator strips Njombo of his property as punishment. Sammy then marries the woman Njombo had hoped to wed.

Elspeth hosts a New Year's Eve party with Mrs Nimmo and a newcomer, Alec Wilson, drawing the community into a social spotlight. The event exposes rivalries and romantic entanglements that ripple through the plantation. It sets the stage for the conflicts to come.

Ian Crawford, a horse trader and safari leader, arrives in the region and quickly becomes infatuated with Lettice Palmer. Lettice responds by giving Elspeth a pony, deepening the entanglements among the adults. The community's social web grows more complicated.

Lettice leaves her first husband to elope with Hereward Palmer, intensifying the rift with the Grants and Palmers. Elspeth develops a strong dislike for Hereward after she witnesses him shoot a baby antelope on a hunt. The personal loyalties in the area become increasingly tense.

Sammy arranges for a curse to be placed on Njombo, reflecting the superstition and animosity in the plantation. An unexpected Act of God eventually lifts the curse, altering the balance of power. The event underscores the fragile line between belief and control in frontier life.

After the railway reaches Thika, Lettice acquires a piano, marking a cultural milestone for the settlers. A leopard kills one of her dogs, and a dangerous hunt follows in which Hereward kills the leopard but is nearly killed himself, saved at the last moment by Roos. The frontier's risks intensify as technology and wildlife collide.

The Palmers, Tilly, and Crawford go on a safari where Lettice and Crawford begin an affair. Hereward and Crawford are about to clash, but Crawford's servant stabs Hereward, ending the confrontation. Crawford leaves the area, while Lettice stays with Hereward.

On 4 August 1914, the war with Germany is declared, forcing the Grants to confront a new frontier of conflict. Robin joins the army, while Tilly becomes a nurse and Elspeth is bullied at school for being a know-it-all. Frustrated, Elspeth runs away back to Thika as Europe plunges into war.

Ian Crawford is killed in the Great War, a blow to the community. Robin is transferred to France to join the fighting, signaling the end of the African chapter for the Grants. The family prepares to return to Europe for the duration.

With the war mobilizing, the Grants bid farewell to their plantation and return to Europe for the duration. Their time in Africa shapes the rest of their lives back home. The colonial project continues elsewhere as new chapters begin beyond their departure.
