Sumptuously filmed, the story follows a shipwrecked Japanese expedition that crosses the Pacific, traverses Siberia, and reaches Catherine the Great’s court in Russia. This Russo‑Japanese co‑production dramatizes a rare historic encounter, won Cannes accolades, yet despite its sweeping scope, and intrigue, it never received wide distribution.
