The Count of Monte-Cristo

Edmond Dantès is a young sailor who defies orders to rescue a shipwrecked woman, Angèle, who carries a letter from the exiled Napoleon. Captain Danglars seizes this crucial letter; upon reaching Marseille, shipowner Morrel condemns Danglars for neglecting his duty and promotes Edmond in his place. Edmond returns home to share the news with his fiancée, Mercédès Herrera and her cousin, Fernand de Morcef, who secretly loves her. Edmond asks Fernand to be his best man at the wedding, but fate intervenes: on the day, Edmond is arrested, accused of Bonapartism, and brought before Gérard de Villefort. Edmond proclaims his innocence, but his knowledge of Angèle’s identity complicates Villefort’s view, and Villefort detains him to question Danglars and Fernand.

Villefort colludes with Danglars and Fernand to keep Edmond imprisoned. Angèle, Villefort’s sister, demands Edmond’s release and threatens to expose Villefort’s affair with Danglars’ wife. To silence her, Villefort enlists Danglars to remove Angèle. Edmond is confined in the Château d’If, where he meets Abbé Faria, who tutors him in languages, science, and culture for eight years. Faria also reveals a vast treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. Before their planned escape, Faria is fatally wounded in a tunnel collapse. Edmond carries Faria’s body to his cell, hides in the burial sack in its place, and, after being cast into the sea, swims to freedom.

Back in Marseille, Edmond learns his father has died and that Mercédès Herrera has married Fernand and moved to Paris. He travels to Monte Cristo, securing the hidden treasure, and a year later reemerges as the Count of Monte Cristo, determined to exact revenge. He locates Angèle, who is dying after being sold into prostitution, and she reveals she once tried to expose Villefort’s crimes, including his attempt to bury his illegitimate son alive. Edmond takes [André] under his wing, renaming him [Andrea Cavalcanti], and makes him a central figure in his plans.

The Count orchestrates a calculated sequence of moves against his enemies. He stages a dramatic rescue of Fernand’s son, Albert, earning Fernand’s trust. Through Albert, Edmond gains introductions to Danglars and Villefort, and he even reunites with Mercédès, who recognizes him despite his changed appearance. Edmond uses [André] to win over Eugénie Danglars and introduces Haydée, a beautiful woman under his protection, hoping she will charm Albert. The Count’s revenge unfolds with surgical precision: Danglars’s fleet vanishes, triggering a stock crash, while Fernand exploits his military access to mislead him about the reports’ falsity. Danglars borrows money from Monte Cristo to recover, pledging his assets as collateral.

In a courtroom showdown, [André] reveals Villefort’s past crimes, exposing Villefort’s illegitimate son and humiliating Villefort in front of the court. Villefort, overwhelmed, withdraws, sparing his former mistress from scandal. [André], driven by vengeance, assassinates his own father but is killed while fleeing. Haydée, crushed by André’s death, turns away from the Count and questions his methods. As Haydée and Albert attempt to leave, the Count confronts them, demanding that Haydée reveal the truth about Albert’s father’s betrayal of her own father, Ali Pasha of Janina. Enraged, Albert challenges the Count to a duel. Mercédès pleads for Albert’s life, and Edmond agrees to spare him, ending the duel without bloodshed. He then encourages Haydée and Albert to seek happiness together.

Mercédès leaves Fernand, who confronts Edmond in a desperate duel of his own. Edmond defeats Fernand but chooses not to kill him, leaving him to live with his disgrace and losses. Edmond then departs on a life of travel, departing his estate behind. In a final letter to Mercédès, he writes a line that favorites his philosophy: > All human wisdom is contained in these two words: “Wait and Hope”
