Set in 1637 Shimabara during the Tokugawa shogunate, the film follows oppressed Japanese peasants who have secretly embraced Christianity. As taxes and persecution mount, they rise in open revolt, rallying around the charismatic Christian leader Shiro Amakusa, who inspires them to fight for religious freedom against the samurai authorities.
