Set in the Hindu epic Ramayana, this 1917 silent film directed and written by Dhundiraj Govind Phalke (Dadasaheb Phalke) follows the demon king Ravana’s abduction of Sita and Rama’s quest to rescue her with the aid of men, monkeys and bears, especially the valiant Hanuman. Hanuman spies Sita in the tulasi garden, confronts Ravana, and later ignites Lanka by setting his fiery tail alight, causing the island’s destruction.
