In the late 1920s Shanghai, as rain-swept streets flood with refugees and the Chinese Civil War tears through the city, a pair of elderly Christian missionaries prepare to celebrate the wedding of Dr. Robert Strike and his childhood sweetheart Megan Davis [Barbara Stanwyck]. The ceremony is interrupted by the grim realities outside—fleeing civilians and the harsh cynicism of some missionaries toward the very people they’ve come to save. Just as Megan arrives, Bob rushes in with a daring plan: he postpones the nuptials to rescue a group of orphans endangered by the war, insisting that Megan accompany him on this perilous mission.

Their perilous journey brings them to the headquarters of General Yen [Nils Asther], a formidable Chinese warlord who dominates the Shanghai region. Megan waits in a car while Bob pleads with Yen for a safe passage that would allow him to save the children. Yen, amused by Bob’s missionary zeal, hands him a worthless pass that barely registers as a promise of help. Undeterred, Bob and Megan reach the St. Andrews orphanage, but the chaos around them leads to a brutal setback: the pass proves useless, and soldiers seize their car as they attempt to depart with the orphans.

The pair finally reach a railway station, only to be knocked unconscious in the ensuing scramble and separated. Sometime later, Megan awakens aboard Yen’s private troop train, under the watch of Yen’s concubine Mah-Li [Toshia Mori]. When the train reaches Yen’s summer palace, Megan is introduced to Jones [Walter Connolly], Yen’s American financial advisor, who reveals he has raised six million dollars for Yen’s war chest, stored in a nearby boxcar. The palace windows become a stark stage for brutal executions outside, while Yen, drawn to the young missionary, tries to shield her from the horror by moving the executions out of earshot and promising to send her back to Shanghai once it’s safe.

One night, Megan experiences a troubling, erotically charged dream in which Yen comes to her aid and kisses her. She accepts Yen’s invitation to dinner, and the two begin to explore a dangerous boundary between faith, desire, and power. During the meal, Yen learns that Mah-Li has betrayed him with Captain Li [Richard Loo]. When Yen arrests Mah-Li for treachery, Megan pleads for mercy and implicitly challenges Yen to test the limits of his own creed by offering her life if Mah-Li proves unfaithful again. Megan’s naïve offer winds up aiding Mah-Li in passing information to Yen’s enemies about the location of Yen’s hidden fortune.

With this information, Yen’s enemies strike, stealing the fortune and leaving Yen financially ruined, abandoned by his soldiers and servants. Yen, unable to take Megan’s life—she has become too precious to him—begins to contemplate his own end. Megan leaves Yen’s chambers in tears, but later returns, clothed in the fine Chinese robes he has given her, and serves Yen in the manner of a concubine. Yen, now defeated in both wealth and spirit, does not abandon her; instead, he prepares a cup of poisoned tea for himself. Megan, in a quiet, devastating twist of resolve, remains by his side, and Yen drinks the tea, choosing poison over an irrevocable break with the life he has known.

The story moves forward to a boat ride back to Shanghai, where Megan and Jones discuss the beauty and tragedy they’ve witnessed. Jones offers gentle consolation, hinting at a belief in reunion beyond this life: a promise that one day Megan will be with Yen again in another life.

Throughout this tale, the sharp contrast between faith and power, tenderness and brutality, is laid bare against a backdrop of political upheaval, personal vulnerability, and the difficult choices that arise when love collides with a world at war.
