The Birthday Cake

Gio's life is irrevocably changed when his father, Sam, is brutally murdered. This tragic event plunges the family into turmoil, particularly affecting his mother, Sofia, who succumbs to grief and refuses to leave her bed.

Seeking solace in his deep sorrow, Gio takes food offered by well-wishers to the local church. There, he lights a candle and confides in Father Kelly about his struggles, including incidents of being bullied at school by a group of Russian boys.

While walking with his cousin Leo, Gio confronts the Russian bullies tormenting him. In a surprising twist, Leo hands Gio a gun, which sends most of the gang running, leaving only one to stand defiantly.

Ten years have passed since Sam's death, marked by a family celebration which coincides with the anniversary of his passing. Despite the decorations, the mood is somber, as Sofia remains heartbroken and reluctant to engage with the festivities.
