A publicity-hungry broadcaster hypes a high-society elopement between Joan Winfield, the daughter of Texas oil tycoon Lucius K. Winfield, and famed bandleader Alan Brice. Into this whirlwind steps Steve Collins, who runs a small air charter service and is desperately trying to keep his business afloat. His plan to fly the couple from Los Angeles to Las Vegas collides with a looming financial deadline: the finance company is ready to seize his airplane unless he comes up with $1,112.77 (equivalent to about $24,900 in 2025) by midnight. When Winfield catches wind of the elopement, he phones his daughter in transit to try to stop it, accusing Alan of being a fortune-hunter. Steve answers back with a bold bargain of his own: deliver Joan to the tycoon, unmarried, in Amarillo, Texas, and take a freight fee in exchange for not aborting the mission.

A tense negotiation unfolds over a price tag of $10 a pound for whatever Joan weighs, and with Joan weighing around 115 pounds, Steve calculates a payday that could clear his debts. After a confrontation with the creditor, Steve knocks him out and, under the ruse of a fake urgent phone call from New York, lures Alan off the airplane and escapes with Joan. The press erupts with headlines about a kidnapping, turning their flight into nationwide spectacle.

Joan tries to bargain for her freedom, offering to pay more than the agreed price to get back to her father. Steve quotes a figure around $1,100, give or take, and sticks to the deal, insisting he cannot go back on his bargain. When Joan attempts to jump from the aircraft, Steve notices her parachute is on backward and swerves to keep her from leaping, a move that sets the stage for a dramatic crash in a ghost town called Bonanza, about sixty miles from the nearest town.

At the crash site, the situation grows more tangled. The assistant district attorney orders Sheriff McGee to pursue the kidnapper for stealing the plane from the finance company, a crime that falls outside kidnapping jurisdiction. Steve and Joan spend the first night at the crash site, where Steve opens a picnic basket filled with indulgent food and gently nudges Joan to eat, a small gesture amidst the escalating tension.

The next day introduces Pop Tolliver, the lone resident of Bonanza. Joan remains convinced she is being kidnapped, while Steve maintains that theirs is a lovers’ quarrel. Tolliver, upon hearing news of the alleged kidnapping, arrests Steve with a gun and locks him in the town jail. Tolliver then borrows an old 1920s jalopy with Joan riding along; the car soon breaks down within sight of Bonanza.

News of a search party reaches Tolliver, who, upon learning that Joan’s father has stated the plot involves Steve stopping the elopement, releases Steve. Tolliver’s resolve shifts as he decides to help return Joan to her father.

Joan and Steve eventually find themselves in a mine shaft within the ghost town. They escape into the mine but are trapped by a cave-in for several hours. While Joan snoozes, Steve discovers a way out and shares a meal with Pop Tolliver. Following Pop’s counsel, Steve returns to Joan inside the mine without revealing the exit. Believing they may die, Joan reevaluates her earlier decision to rush into marriage with Alan after knowing him only four days. Steve confesses his love, but when he kisses her, she detects mustard on his lips—an awkward clue that hints at his deception.

Exiting the mine, they learn that Alan has tracked them down, accompanied by a Nevada judge, while the sheriff arrives to arrest Steve on a California arrest warrant. To shield Steve from arrest, Tolliver fabricates a claim that Bonanza lies in Nevada, thereby invalidating the warrant. Despite the mounting tension, Joan chooses to marry Alan, though Steve does not object to the Nevada judge’s marriage on the grounds that the ceremony would be invalid. The “newlyweds” board another aircraft, but when Joan spots a souvenir labeled “Bonanza, California,” she realizes they are not truly married and parachutes out to reunite with Steve.

The couple ultimately marries with Joan’s father’s blessing and honeymoon in Bonanza. In a final twist of practical math, Joan weighs in at 118 pounds, making the COD payment $1,180, just enough to settle Steve’s debt and stabilize the fragile, unconventional romance that began as a desperate business maneuver. The tale closes with a sense of reconciliation amid the chaos, as two people who started with a risky plan end up choosing each other against a backdrop of headlines, lawsuits, and a town that never really existed in the way they imagined.
